Local Dog Delivers Oscar-Worthy Performance Over One Tiny Pill
A LaughParty comic take.
Comic fiction: The following is an invented, satirical take on the universal struggle of giving a dog medicine. All characters and events are imaginary. Any resemblance to your own dog is, frankly, inevitable.
In what critics are already calling "the most dramatic eleven seconds in household history," a fictional beagle named Sir Barksworth gave a stunning performance Tuesday evening when his owner attempted to administer a single, very small allergy pill.
The pill, roughly the size of a lentil, was presented inside a generous chunk of cheddar cheese. Sir Barksworth reportedly accepted the cheese with enthusiasm, chewed thoughtfully, swallowed the cheese, and then, with the precision of a jewel thief, returned the pill to the kitchen floor completely intact and only slightly damp.
"I didn't even see him do it," said his fictional owner, Dana. "The cheese went in. The pill came out. It was like watching a magician who hates me."
Round two escalated quickly. Dana tried the classic hold-the-snout technique, gently placing the pill at the back of the dog's throat. Sir Barksworth responded with an expression witnesses described as "a Victorian widow receiving terrible news by telegram." His eyebrows climbed to new heights. His ears folded backward in disbelief. He turned slowly toward Dana with a look that said, "After everything we've been through together? After I barked at that mailbox for you?"
Then came the sigh. Not an ordinary dog sigh, but a long, theatrical exhale that seemed to deflate his entire body, as though his soul were leaving to file a formal complaint.
"He made eye contact with me the whole time," Dana said. "I felt like I was being judged by a tiny, furry Supreme Court."
Neighborhood pets reportedly gathered at the window to watch. A cat next door was overheard thinking, "Amateur. I simply vanish for three days."
Veterinary experts, who are also fictional, explained that dogs possess an extraordinary ability to detect medication. "A dog can find a pill hidden inside a meatball, wrapped in turkey, buried in peanut butter, and disguised with a tiny mustache," said Dr. Fetchworth, a made-up specialist in canine suspicion. "Their noses are basically airport security, but with more drool."
Ultimately, Dana succeeded on the fourth attempt by using a strategy known in the pet community as "the decoy." She gave Sir Barksworth two plain treats, followed by the medicated treat, followed quickly by a third plain treat. Overwhelmed by the rapid-fire snack delivery, the dog swallowed everything before his inner detective could open an investigation.
Moments later, Sir Barksworth had fully recovered from his ordeal. He wagged his tail, flopped onto his back, and demanded belly rubs as if nothing had happened.
"That's the worst part," Dana said. "Five minutes of betrayal-face, then he forgives me completely. I'm still emotionally recovering, and he's already napping."
At press time, Sir Barksworth was reportedly preparing for tomorrow's dose by practicing his wounded expression in the reflection of the oven door.
