Bear Skips the Bestsellers, Checks Out the Honey Instead

A LaughParty comic take.

Comic fiction: This is a satirical take inspired by a headline about a bear, a library and a Winnie the Pooh celebration. Every character, quote and detail below is invented for laughs.

Librarians in a fictional version of a mountain town are calling it the most on-theme heist in history. On the one day of the year dedicated to a certain honey-obsessed bear in a too-short red shirt, an actual bear wandered into the library, ignored thousands of carefully shelved books and went straight for the snack table.

The intruder never stopped at the front desk. It had no library card, no photo ID and, according to our imaginary witnesses, no shirt of any length. Its taste in genres, however, was unmistakable.

"We set out a little honey display for the kids," said head librarian Marjorie Fernwhistle, who does not exist but feels very real in our hearts. "We expected glitter glue and maybe a sticky toddler. We did not expect a three-hundred-pound literary critic."

Imaginary security footage shows the bear pausing briefly near the cookbook section, possibly to research recipes, before deciding that honey is best enjoyed the traditional way: face first, no utensils, zero regrets.

Staff members, who were in no danger in this made-up story, retreated calmly behind the circulation desk and did what librarians do best. They maintained a respectful silence.

"Honestly, it was the quietest patron we've ever had," said volunteer Dennis Pickleworth, another fictional person. "No phone calls, no arguing about the Wi-Fi password. Just a little snuffling. I'd take that over the guy who microwaves fish in the break room."

The bear left after about ten minutes, taking the honey and leaving behind one muddy pawprint on the welcome mat and a faint aroma of pine needles and poor decisions. Library officials have since begun calculating late fees.

"Technically, the honey was never checked out," Fernwhistle explained. "So we're treating it as a long-term loan. At ten cents a day, the bear will owe us about four dollars by next spring. We're not optimistic."

Children at the event were thrilled. Several declared it the best Pooh Day ever, and one six-year-old asked whether next year's guest could be a tiger who bounces. Organizers told her probably not.

Going forward, the fictional library plans to boost security with sturdier doors, bear-proof snack containers and a sign reading Please Bring Books, Not Appetites. They are also considering a new reading program for local wildlife, tentatively titled Paws for Literacy.

As for the bear, it remains at large, presumably napping somewhere and digesting its sweet, sweet crime. Wildlife experts in our pretend universe say there is no cause for alarm, only a gentle reminder to the public: if you leave honey out on Winnie the Pooh Day, you are not hosting a party. You are sending an invitation.
