Local Seal Pup Joins Surf Crew, Immediately Becomes Its Most Committed Member

A LaughParty comic take.

A comic take. The events below are invented for laughs and inspired only by the general idea of a seal pup who likes to hang out with surfers.

Every morning at dawn, a small crew of San Diego surfers paddles out to catch the first waves of the day. And every morning, they find someone already waiting for them: a baby seal pup with the punctuality of a train conductor and the body type of an overfilled water balloon.

"Honestly, he's more reliable than any of us," said a fictional surfer we'll call Dale, who admitted he has missed sunrise sessions for reasons including "my alarm was set to PM" and "I couldn't find my other sandal." "The seal has never missed a day. He doesn't even own sandals."

According to our completely made-up reporting, the pup, whom the crew has nicknamed Captain Flippers, follows a strict routine. He arrives early, floats on his back in what experts describe as "aggressive relaxation," and then hops onto the nearest surfboard without asking. The surfboard's owner is then expected to steer while Captain Flippers handles the important job of looking majestic.

"At first I thought he was stealing my board," said another imaginary surfer, Priya. "Then I realized he was just carpooling. He's very eco-conscious."

Captain Flippers has reportedly developed his own surf style, which mostly involves lying down, sliding sideways and occasionally sneezing at the ocean in protest. Local surf instructors (also fictional) have called the technique "unorthodox" and "honestly better than what most beginners do."

The crew says the arrangement has some challenges. The pup has zero interest in wax, sunscreen or the concept of personal space. He also refuses to wait his turn, a serious breach of surf etiquette. But nobody has the heart to tell him, mostly because he looks like a potato that learned to swim and is extremely proud of it.

"We had a group meeting about it," Dale said. "We voted on whether to set boundaries. The seal voted too. He barked twice. We took that as a no."

Wildlife-loving beachgoers remind everyone that real seals should be given plenty of space and never be chased, fed or picked up, because the ocean is their home and we are basically guests with expensive foam rectangles. In our fictional version, Captain Flippers sets his own schedule anyway, which is more than most of us can say about our lives.

As the sun climbs higher, the surfers eventually head back to shore for jobs, errands and responsibilities. Captain Flippers stays behind, bobbing in the waves with the calm confidence of someone who has never once checked an email.

"Some people find their purpose in their career," Priya said, watching him drift away. "He found his on the back of my board. And honestly? I respect it."

Sources say he'll be back tomorrow at dawn. Early, obviously.
